Walker's Tuscany in a Box (In a Box Walking & Cycling Guides)

The Tuscan landscape, immortalized in the paintings of the Renaissance, is perhaps the greatest man-made landscape in the world. These Are Your Endorphins Speaking: Cycling & Camping in Italy or Who Needs Drugs When You Have a Bicycle

These Are Your Endorphins Speaking: Cycling & Camping in Italy or Who Needs Drugs When You Have a Bicycle

Australians are great travellers, possibly because most Australians are immigrants or the sons and daughters of immigrants. I'm sure there has been a gene selected for the Australian population simply because we're all immigrants. I chose to travel by bicycle around Italy, not because I am particularly green, although knowing that the only greenhouse gases I generated were those that I transpired was seductive, but because it was obviously a very efficient way of moving through a landscape that is essentially a vast, open air museum. This is not the story of just where I went and who I met, but also what I saw and, most importantly, what I thought and felt. The tour yielded a return far in excess of the calorific effort that went into it. I was a 61-year-old man at the time, living with prostate cancer, in need of a travel experience that would teach me something about the meaning of life. This account captures something of the excitement and wonder of exploring, by bike, what is undoubtedly one of the great civilizations. About the Author: John Spencer grew up in Broken Hill, a mining town in Western NSW, Australia, and currently lives in Condobolin in Central Western NSW, Australia. John is married with two children; he is retired and often takes on project work that interests ...

The Death of Marco Pantani: A Biography

The Death of Marco Pantani: A Biography

The intimate biography of the charismatic Tour de France winner Marco Pantani, now updated to include the 2014 and 2015 investigation into Pantani's death.National Sporting Club Book of the YearShortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award 'An exhaustively detailed and beautiful book . . . a fitting, ambivalent tribute - to the man, and to the dark heart of the sport he loved' Independent On Valentine's day 2004, Marco Pantani was found dead in a cheap hotel. It defied belief: Pantani, having won the rare double of the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France in 1998, was regarded as the only cyclist capable of challenging Lance Armstrong's dominance. Only later did it emerge that Pantani had been addicted to cocaine since 1999.Drawing on his personal encounters with Pantani, as well as exclusive access to his psychoanalysts, and interviews with his family and friends, Matt Rendell has produced the definitive account of an iconic sporting figure.

A Canterbury Pilgrimage / An Italian Pilgrimage: Elizabeth Robins Pennell & Joseph Pennell (Wayfarer)

A Canterbury Pilgrimage / An Italian Pilgrimage: Elizabeth Robins Pennell & Joseph Pennell (Wayfarer)

"A peasant in peaked hat and blue shirt, with trousers rolled up high above his bare knees, crossed the road and silently examined the tricycle. "You have a good horse," he then said; "it eats nothing." -from An Italian PilgrimageThe 1880s was an exhilarating time for cycling pioneers like Elizabeth and her husband Joseph Pennell. As boneshakers and high-wheelers evolved into tandem tricycles and the safety bike, cycling grew from child's play and extreme sport into a leisurely and, importantly, literary mode of transportation. The illustrated travel memoirs of "those Pennells" were-and still are-highly entertaining. They helped usher in the new age of leisure touring, while playfully hearkening back to famous literary journeys. In this new edition, Dave Buchanan provides rich cultural contexts surrounding the Pennell's first two adventures. These long out-of-print travel memoirs will delight avid cyclists as well as scholars of travel literature, cycling history, women's writing, Victorian literature, and illustration.

Italian Racing Bicycles: The People, The Products, The Passion

Italian Racing Bicycles: The People, The Products, The Passion

There are bicycles. And then there are Italian bicycles. As with high fashion or sports cars, when the world speaks of racing bicycles the conversation soon turns to Italy. Seasoned cyclists know that an Italian bicycle is more intimately yours, a more personal possession, than a bicycle of other origin. Italian bicycles are built to race with passion, and to win.Italian Racing Bicycles traces the rich history of 40 landmark brands intimately connected with racing. Not surprisingly, the brands have deep roots, some tracing their lineage back more than 100 years to the early days of the velocipede. They also share a hunger for advanced technology, pushing engineering to new heights with exotic metal alloys, elaborate weaves of expensive carbon fiber, and aerodynamic studies that help their bikes and riders cheat the wind for greater speed.Beyond these commonalities, though, the stories diverge. The restless inquisitiveness of Ernesto Colnago could not be more different from the methodical calm of Ugo De Rosa, for example, and yet these two iconic frame builders contributed immeasurably to the racing victories of the great Eddy Merckx. The passion for experimentation of Pinarello, the brazen creativity of Cinelli, the barrier-bursting hour machine of Moser—in search of racing vic...
