Two Thumbs Out: Hitchhiking Adventures In 1950s Europe

Two Thumbs Out: Hitchhiking Adventures In 1950s Europe

In March 1954, two young Australian girls set out on what became a five-year travelling adventure across Europe and North America. This book details the first 6 months of that adventure as they arrive in Naples, Italy, and begin to get a feel for how to get around. Using their thumbs for rides they venture across Italy, Austria, Switzerland, France, Spain, Portugal, and Morroco, leading a life on the road that is far removed from what they left behind in Sydney. This is a heartfelt memoir of a form of traveling that has all but disappeared. The book recalls the numerous adventures and encounters Peggy and her traveling companion Jane had all across western and southern Europe, experiencing the warmth and kindness of strangers that make thumbing a ride such a rewarding form of travel.

Be Bop A Lula

Be Bop A Lula

It was a time when The Crowd was a sacred sect meeting in a candy-store temple, and Hanging Out was a full time obligation, with occasional time outs for gang wars and bar fights; drive ins and making out; hot rods and motorcycles. Egg creams and cherry cokes were the nectar of the Gods, and Coney Island hot dogs were tube steaks to teenage gourmets. It was 1957...and coming of age will never be like this again! The names on the draft notices and marriage licenses were beginning to sound familiar. It was the end of an era – the end of their teens. However, they were not about to bow out quietly. Be Bop A Lula follows The Crowd as they crammed as much fun and excitement as possible into those final days, which are categorized into 14 chapters, remembered with the rock 'n' roll songs most closely associated with each adventure. Hilarious confrontations with parents, teachers and friends are recorded in Rock Around The Clock and School Days, while Rip It Up tells of a bloody gang fight with a rival gang. Oh What a Night is a minute-by-minute account of one of the Crowd's madcap parties, and Black Denim Trousers deals with motorcycles, culminating in a disastrous street race. Other chapters, like The Big Break, Let The Good Times Roll and Get a Job, cover bar fights, hangi...

Through the Eyes of a Child: The story of two little girls growing up in the foster care system of the 1950s

Through the Eyes of a Child: The story of two little girls growing up in the foster care system of the 1950s

Through my minds eye I can see my childhood like it was yesterday. My early years were a constant quest for acceptance. I didn't realize until adulthood how deeply affected I had been by my unstable childhood. This is my personal chronicle of moving through the foster care system in the 1950's. I never intended to write this book but in doing so was able to come to terms with the unresolved emotions and latent anxieties produced by my childhood memories. Excerpt: I heard the woman say we could call her mother. My mind hesitated, as if in a time warp, contemplating that word….. mother. It always perplexed me when strangers asked to be addressed in such an intimate manner. My contemplation was interrupted by the sound of a train whistle snapping me back into the moment and the realization the house sat adjacent to train tracks. In spite of the awkwardness I felt in speaking the word aloud, forever the obedient child, I complied with the woman’s request.
