The Grind Date [2 LP][Explicit]

The Grind Date [2 LP][Explicit]

10th Anniversay reissue of The Grind DateAvailable on CD and 2LP colored vinyl (one LP orange / other LP is blue)Features guest appearances from Common, Ghostface, MF Doom, Flava Flav, Sean Paul, & more ALLMUSIC Review:De La Soul were interrupted just before they could deliver the third volume in their AOI series -- projected to be a DJ album -- to Tommy Boy. (The label perhaps bailed out from a 15-year relationship precisely because the group was going to release such a commercially bankrupt title, one that was planned instead to appear on an independent label run by Maseo.) De La Soul quickly realized they couldn't go ahead with the plan after signing their AOI label to Sanctuary, so they wrote a new record, The Grind Date. Although it may see them settling into a holding pattern, at least the pattern of 2001's AOI: Bionix is one that any hip-hop fan won't mind hearing repeated. Better yet, it boasts productions from an excellent cast of figures -- partner in crime Supa Dave West, author of the best tracks on their AOI series, J-Dilla, who's stretching out his patented (read: overdone) sound to embrace classic hip-hop, an only slightly commercialized Madlib, and young phenom 9th Wonder. Madlib gets what must be the first lead single of his career, a bright, antimaterialist tale...

De La Soul Is Dead (180 Gram Vinyl)

De La Soul Is Dead (180 Gram Vinyl)

De La Soul's second album, originally released in 1991, was initially received poorly by the press and their fans due to its immediate rejection of the 'daisy-age' image created by their debut LP. In the years since, however, it has come to be accepted as a stone classic that may even surpass the feel-good jams of Three Feet High And Rising with its expansive scope and more diverse subject matter (drug addiction, incest, poseurs, in addition to the more expected, light-hearted material). Prince Paul's production is, again, nothing short of brilliant and rappers Plugs 1, 2 and 3 bring the flow that has made them, rightfully, hip-hop legends. 180 gram vinyl reissue.

93 Til Infinity [Vinyl]

93 Til Infinity [Vinyl]

There are very few albums across any genre that stand the test of time better than 93 'Til Infinity, the classic debut record from Hieroglyphics crew's very own Souls of Mischief. In an era where Gangsta Rap and G-Funk dominated the West Coast Rap scene, Souls broke ground on a completely unique and thoroughly west coast sound. While the Dr. Dre's and Snoop Doggs were garnering much of the mainstream attention, Souls were quietly forging a charismatic, critically acclaimed, and cohesively shaped record that when categorized, sounded much closer to A Tribe Called Quest than N.W.A. The sound of their debut is characteristic of the distinct style explored by the collective, including a rhyme scheme based on internal rhyme and beats centered around a live bass and obscure jazz and funk samples.93 'Til Infinity was propelled into success by its title track and lead single, which reached #32 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also featured singles 'That's When Ya Lost' and 'Never No More' which also reached the Hot Rap Singles. In 1998, the album was selected as one of The Source's 100 Best Albums of All Time.Considered by many to be a text book 'slept-on' classic Rap record, 93 'Til Infinity has only grown better with age. The album simply defines the Hiero golden age with a sound that woul...

3 Feet High & Rising (2LP)

3 Feet High & Rising (2LP)

Prince Paul produced De La Soul's debut album, 3 Feet High and Rising, which was released in the spring of 1989. Several critics and observers labeled the group as a neo-hippie band because the record praised peace and love as well as proclaiming the dawning of "the D.A.I.S.Y. age" (Da Inner Sound, Y'all). Though the trio was uncomfortable with the hippie label, there was no denying that the humor and eclecticism presented an alternative to the hardcore rap that dominated hip-hop. De La Soul quickly were perceived as the leaders of a contingent of New York-based alternative rappers that also included A Tribe Called Quest, Queen Latifah, the Jungle Brothers, and Monie Love; all of these artists dubbed themselves the Native Tongues posse.

Live

After landing a total of ten #1 hits, moving over 20 million records worldwide, and selling out shows everywhere with a stage, Collective Soul—Ed Roland [vocals, guitars, keyboards], Dean Roland [guitars], Will Turpin [bass], Jesse Triplett [guitars], and Johnny Rabb [drums]—staunchly and proudly remain a rock ‘n’ roll band through and through. Nowhere is that reassuring fact more apparent than on the first proper live album of the group’s 25-year career, LIVE. Fittingly, they introduce the collection with a live piano rendition of their biggest hit 1993’s “Shine”—which would be crowned #1 Album Rock Song of 1994, win a Billboard award for “Top Rock Track,” land on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of the ‘90s,” and notch Dolly Parton a GRAMMY® Award for “Best Vocal Performance” on her 2001 cover. Preserving the soulful spark that established them as the “Southern Gentlemen of the Alternative Rock Scene,” Collective Soul build upon a formidable foundation. They were inducted into the Georgia Music Hall of Fame in 2009. To date, they average over 1 million Spotify streams a month. From a classic performance at Woodstock 1994 to a notable placement on the Twilight soundtrack, their influence continues to course through generations of pop culture.
