Texas Everbearing Edible Fig Plant - Ficus carica - Sweet - 4" Pot

Texas Everbearing Edible Fig Plant - Ficus carica - Sweet - 4" Pot

The Texas Everbearing fig is one of the favorite figs of the South, but is also one of the winter hardy figs. The fruit has a small eye and does not tend to swell and burst if the weather is wet when the figs are ripening. These trees develop fruit parthenocarpically (without pollination) so more than one plant is not needed. However, if you are not familiar with growing figs it may be a good idea to purchase more than one plant to provide a comparison. As a patio plant, set outside during the summer and move indoors in the winter. Fig trees usually begin bearing fruit within two years. Mulch heavily with organic materials to conserve moisture, improve soil structure and reduce root knot nematode levels. Once established, figs are drought tolerant and generally free of pests and diseases.

Desert King Edible Fig Plant - Ficus carica - Sweet - 4" Pot

Desert King Edible Fig Plant - Ficus carica - Sweet - 4" Pot

People love 'Desert King' for its ability to produce a large early crop of figs. The first crop is called the breba crop where the figs form on the mature wood from last year's growth. The breba crop ripens in mid-summer, while the second crop ripens in September. The yellowish-green figs have a sweet, strawberry-colored center and they are larger than most other figs (about the size of an extra-large egg). This variety does well in cooler climates like coastal regions or high elevations where intense summer heat is often absent. Hardy to Zone 7 and higher for outdoors. Full sun, grows to 2-3' in container, minimum temperature indoors 33°, Summer bloomer. Easy Grower!

FIG FRUIT TREE 'Texas Everbearing' LIVE PLANT Edible garden Common fig, Higo

FIG FRUIT TREE 'Texas Everbearing' LIVE PLANT Edible garden Common fig, Higo

TEXAS EVERBEARING FIG. Medium-large brown fruit with deep burgundy pulp. This variety is similar to the Brown Turkey Fig and the two, more often than not, are reported to be the same variety. Before offering this for sale we have consulted a number of experts and have done a lot of research. This is what we have found: Texas Everbearing Fig (TF) and Brown Turkey Fig (BT) have similar cold tolerance, and somewhat similar looking fruit with very similar taste. A few minor differences reported between the two include the Texas Everbearing having three lobed leaves as opposed to five lobed leaves. (Of course, this can be variable at different stages of growth.) The TF tree is reported to be more upright. There are two major differences, one of which is the heavier first crop with the TE. Texas Everbearing, while not for"ever bearing," does have an extended season. It bears two (good) crops when conditions are conducive. The first crop (breba crop) is usually heavier than the BT's first crop. It ripens late May to late June with the second crop ripening late September through early November. The other major difference is the eye or the point where the fruit skin comes together at the apex. The "closed eye" of a fruit can prevent water, fungi, etc from entering the fruit and souring it...
