Fugitive Visions: An Adoptee's Return to Korea

Fugitive Visions: An Adoptee's Return to Korea

The powerful second memoir by the author of the widely acclaimed The Language of Bloodmade in Korea > cheap goods > cheap labor > cheap womb > cheap adoption > cheap immigration > cheap immigrant > cheap yellow daughter > honorary white > almost but not quiteWhenever she speaks to a stranger in her native Korea, Jane Jeong Trenka is forced to explain what she is. Japanese? Chinese? The answer-that she was adopted from Korea as a baby and grew up in the United States-is a source of grief, pride, and confusion.Trenka's award-winning first book, The Language of Blood, told the story of her upbringing in a white family in rural Minnesota. Now, in this searching and provocative memoir, Trenka explores a new question: Can she make an adult life for herself in Korea? Despite numerous setbacks, Trenka resolves to learn the language and ways of her unfamiliar birth country. In navigating the myriad contradictions and disjunctions that have made up her life, Trenka turns to the lessons from her past-in particular, the concept of dissonance and harmony learned over her years as a musician. In Fugitive Visions, named after a composition by Prokofiev, Trenka has succeeded in braiding the disparate elements of her life into a recognizable and at times heartbreaking whole.

Sarcasms, Visions Fugitives and Other Short Works for Piano (Dover Music for Piano)

Sarcasms, Visions Fugitives and Other Short Works for Piano (Dover Music for Piano)

One of the 20th century's most prolific composers of piano music, Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953) is celebrated for his unique piano idiom, combining the seemingly incongruous elements of highly percussive textures with passages of great lyrical charm. "Above all," notes Grove's, "his music shows a professional care for the performer, never reaching beyond the practicable limits of execution."Pianists will welcome this excellent new compilation of pieces composed between 1907 and 1922 — the great formative years of Prokofiev's unique approach to keyboard writing — from his highly original Diabolical suggestion and the dramatic, capricious Sarcasms to the very popular March and Scherzo transcribed by the composer from his opera The love for three organs.Reproduced from authoritative early editions, this generous collection includes Four études, Op. 2; Four pieces, Op. 3; excerpts from Four pieces, Op. 4; Toccata, Op. 11; Ten pieces, Op. 12; the complete Sarcasms, Op. 17, and Visions fugitives, Op. 22; Tales of the old grandmother, Op. 31; Four pieces, Op. 32; and the March and Scherzo, Op. 33ter.

Fugitive Vision: Slave Image and Black Identity in Antebellum Narrative (Blacks in the Diaspora)

Fugitive Vision: Slave Image and Black Identity in Antebellum Narrative (Blacks in the Diaspora)

Analyzing the impact of black abolitionist iconography on early black literature and the formation of black identity, Fugitive Vision examines the writings of Frederick Douglass, William Wells Brown, William and Ellen Craft, and Harriet Jacobs, and the slave potter David Drake. Juxtaposing pictorial and literary representations, the book argues that the visual offered an alternative to literacy for current and former slaves, whose works mobilize forms of illustration that subvert dominant representations of slavery by both apologists and abolitionists. From a portrait of Douglass's mother as Ramses to the incised snatches of proverb and prophecy on Dave the Potter's ceramics, the book identifies a "fugitive vision" that reforms our notions of antebellum black identity, literature, and cultural production.

Visions fugitives (Medtner/Prokoviev/Chopin)

Visions fugitives (Medtner/Prokoviev/Chopin)

Pianist Anna Gourari's ECM debut 2012's Canto Oscuro, an album that channels the Baroque and its spirit reflecting darkly through the ages earned praise far and wide. Gramophone declared her version of the Bach-Busoni Chaconne "one of the most riveting on record," while The Absolute Sound judged the entire disc "devastating." Visions Fugitives, Gourari's second ECM release, showcases the intense beauty of her sound in Prokofiev's title work, a set of 20 fleeting visions whose moods swing from lyrical to sardonic, grotesque to calm, melancholy to boisterous, nostalgic to insistent, and back again. The album also features Nicolai Medtner's Fairy Tale in F minor, from one of his sets of skazki tales of musical figments, of melodies and harmonies, rhythmic profiles and altered chords, shapes and gestures and atmospheres. Then there is Chopin's Sonata No. 3 in B minor, which encompasses not only a Beethoven-inspired opening movement but also a Largo that's like a funeral song, with a melodic poignancy that justifies and even necessitates some extraordinary harmonic progressions.
