A Gentleman and a Player

A Gentleman and a Player

In June 1972, Glenn Stewart boarded the SS France in New York together with his mother, brother and sister. He was heading across the Atlantic towards a new school and a new life - that of an American in England. A stranger in a strange land, he had to learn how to cope with the baffling customs of the people who suddenly surrounded him - and learn fast. Through school, travels across Europe, and on to Oxford University, Stewart rampaged through life, drinking, socialising, chasing girls, and getting in and out of scrapes. 'A Gentleman and a Player' is his memoir of those times and places, charting the progress of a youthful, iconoclastic, sexually voracious cultural guerilla's journey through British society and Oxford University. Over time, he discovered how to be both a Gentleman and a Player - but the lessons were never easily learned. Acutely observed, painfully candid, and often very funny, 'A Gentleman and a Player' identifies the strengths and weaknesses, the fine points and the follies of both countries – and those of the author as well.Anyone looking for a comparative cultural and educational critique of America and Britain – or just a few tips on how to find a girlfriend in England – will find 'A Gentleman And a Player' essential reading."A brilliantly observed ...

Gentleman & Player: The Story of Colin Cowdrey, Cricket's Most Elegant and Charming Batsman

Gentleman & Player: The Story of Colin Cowdrey, Cricket's Most Elegant and Charming Batsman

Colin Cowdrey is remembered for the elegance of his strokeplay; but there was more to this complex man than a classical cover drive. Successes were numerous: 114 Test matches, 22 Test hundreds, 100 first-class centuries, countless famous victories and unforgettable innings. There was controversy and disappointment too, chief among them being repeated snubs for the England captaincy and the D'Oliveira Affair. Cowdrey was involved in three of England's most memorable Tests: Lord's in 1963 against the West Indies, batting at 11 with his arm in plaster, two balls left and all four results possible; Trinidad in 1968 in which England secured a famous victory against the West Indies; and The Oval in 1968 when England gained an improbable final-over win against Australia. In later life, he shone as an administrative leader - as president of Kent and of the MCC, and as chairman of the ICC - and was made a Lord. Sir Garry Sobers spoke for many when he said at his memorial service, "Colin Cowdrey was a great man."

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. An Gentleman Player: His a Secret (Classic Reprint)

Who ever loved that loved not at first sight? Quoted in As You Like It from Marlowe s Hero and Leander. AT three oclock in the afternoon of the cold first Monday in March, 1601, a red flag rose, and a trumpet sounded thrice, from a little gabled turret protruding up out of a large wooden building in a field in that part of Southwark known as the Bankside and bordering on the Thames west of London Bridge. This rude edifice, or enclosure, was round (not like its successor, hexagonal) in shape ;was in great part roofless ;was built on a brick and stone foundation, and was encircled by a ditch for drainage.(Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.)About the Publisher Forgotten Books is a publisher of historical writings, such as: Philosophy, Classics, Science, Religion, History, Folklore and Mythology.Forgotten Books' Classic Reprint Series utilizes the latest technology to regenerate facsimiles of historically important writings. Christy Mathewson, the Christian Gentleman: How One Man's Faith and Fastball Forever Changed Baseball

Christy Mathewson, the Christian Gentleman: How One Man's Faith and Fastball Forever Changed Baseball

Nearly a century after his final major league appearance, Christy Mathewson is still considered one of the greatest right-handed pitchers in the history of baseball. Mathewson ranks in the top ten among pitchers for wins, shutouts, and ERA, and in 1936 he was honored as one of the inaugural members of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Playing in the early twentieth century, Mathewson was the nation’s first All-American hero, a man of Christianity inspiring the values of millions while bringing dignity to a game that had previously been reserved for rougher characters. In Christy Mathewson, the Christian Gentleman: How One Man's Faith and Fastball Forever Changed Baseball, Bob Gaines delivers a close and personal look at the extraordinary life and soul of a gifted man living in a unique time. After growing up in a loving, Christian home and attending Bucknell University under the careful watch of his childhood pastor, Mathewson struggled to find his footing in the unsavory world of professional baseball. Seen as an “intellectual college boy” whose shy personality was misinterpreted as an aloof arrogance, Mathewson’s faith and character were put to the test. Through strong will and an unusual partnership with John McGraw—a manager his exact opposite in everything but a desire to...

Wally Hammond: Gentleman & Player

Wally Hammond: Gentleman & Player

Walter Hammond had all the attributes of a Boy’s Own hero. On the field he struck an imposing figure, handsome of face and broad of shoulder, as immaculately turned out in his whites as he was off the field when his dapper manner charmed the ladies. He moved with a languid, easy grace, whether swooping in the covers or taking slip catches few could match. His batting was all elegant orthodoxy, his cover drive of exquisite beauty and power, his fast-medium bowling delivered from the most classical of actions. He won matches for his county, Gloucestershire, almost on his own. He came through the professional ranks to captain England to their biggest win in an Ashes test. His contemporaries saluted his genius. Yet his star seems to have dimmed, the modern fan and cricket writer seemingly not much interested in him. When the names of past greats of the game have rolled down through the years, his is one that you rarely seem to hear. Even so, many people will say that Wally Hammond is England’s best test cricketer. For his abundant talents, for all his admirers beyond the boundary, however, Hammond was not a happy or fulfilled man. If life was not always as kind to him as it could have been, how much of this was his own fault? And why is he not better known these days? How could s...
