Have Dog, Will Travel: A Poet’s Journey

Have Dog, Will Travel: A Poet’s Journey

In a lyrical love letter to guide dogs everywhere, a blind poet shares his delightful story of how a guide dog changed his life and helped him discover a newfound appreciation for travel and independence.Stephen Kuusisto was born legally blind—but he was also raised in the 1950s and taught to deny his blindness in order to "pass" as sighted. Stephen attended public school, rode a bike, and read books pressed right up against his nose. As an adult, he coped with his limited vision by becoming a professor in a small college town, memorizing routes for all of the places he needed to be. Then, at the age of 38, he was laid off. With no other job opportunities in his vicinity, he would have to travel to find work. This is how he found himself at Guiding Eyes paired with a Labrador named Corky. In this vivid and lyrical memoir, Stephen Kuusisto recounts how an incredible partnership with a guide dog changed his life and the heart-stopping, wondrous adventure that began for him in midlife. Profound and deeply moving, this is a spiritual journey, the story of discovering that life with a guide dog is both a method and a state of mind.

Amphibians and Reptiles of the US–Mexico Border States/Anfibios y reptiles de los estados de la frontera México–Estados Unidos (W. L. Moody Jr. Natural History Series)

Amphibians and Reptiles of the US–Mexico Border States/Anfibios y reptiles de los estados de la frontera México–Estados Unidos (W. L. Moody Jr. Natural History Series)

In the first bilingual work on the reptiles and amphibians of the US–Mexico border, top herpetologists come together to describe the herpetofauna of the states of this region, which includes more than 600 species of toads, frogs, salamanders, turtles, sea turtles, alligators, lizards, snakes, and sea snakes that are found along the almost 2,000-mile border between the two countries. Each chapter is devoted to one state—four in the US (California, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas) and six in Mexico (Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas)—with text in both English and Spanish. The chapters contain an introduction to the area, a review of the research, a sketch of the state’s physiography, and a description of the species present as well as the pertinent conservation issues they face. A color photo gallery includes images of nearly all species. Almost 40 percent of the featured native species are shared between the US and Mexico, reminding us that animals depend on the integrity of natural landscapes and proving the need for a comprehensive, bilingual reference to help lead a shared effort in the management and conservation of the borderlands.

Geneva (NY) (Images of America)

Geneva (NY) (Images of America)

Geneva lies in the heart of the Finger Lakes region at the top of Seneca Lake, which is important to the community for both transportation and leisure. With more than two hundred vintage images, Geneva presents a well-researched overview of the town's past, from its settlement in the 1790s to 1940. Pictured are some of the architectural gems that became the cultural cornerstones of a thriving place-the Smith Opera House, the Richard Upjohn-designed Blackwell House and St. John's Chapel on the Hobart & William Smith campus, as well as some of the remarkable people who lived here: Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman in the country to receive a medical degree; Henry McDonald, one of the first African American professional football players; Arthur Dove, America's first modernist painter; and Joseph Swift, the first graduate of West Point.

We Might As Well Call It The Lyric Essay

We Might As Well Call It The Lyric Essay

"We might as well call it the lyric essay because I don't think 'essay' means for most readers what essayists hope it does," John D'Agata writes in the book's introduction. "Or, we might as well call it the lyric essay because 'nonfiction' is far too limiting. Or, we might as well call it the lyric essay because 'creative nonfiction' -- let's face it -- is desperate..."
