The House of the Lord: A Study of Holy Sanctuaries Ancient and Modern (Illustrated)

The House of the Lord is an informed, comprehensive study of Christian churches modern and ancient. This superb edition includes the forty-six original plate illustrations. By cataloging a range of places of worship in the United States, this manual chronicles the evolution of architectural styles pioneered in the country. We see how the Christians of the Midwest gradually gained in ambition and boldness, constructing larger churches and temples in successive displays of devotion to the Lord. James E. Talmage used his own status as a member of the Church of the Latter-day Saints to receive access to the interiors of several churches he describes. He photographed the most iconic interior and exterior rooms, noting the differences in style and form present. This book was originally published in 1912, and as such may be considered something of a retrospective on the ascent of Christian belief in the United States during the 19th century. We receive a detailed account of the planning and organisation behind the spread of Christianity and Mormonism. The ethos and internal discussions over the design and characteristics of the churches is in full evidence, while Talmage's knowledge of ancient places of worship is demonstrated by his apt comparisons to the newer churches and his gene...

The Great Apostasy

The Great Apostasy

The Great Apostasy Considered in the Light of Scriptural and Secular History is a 1909 book by James E. Talmage that summarizes the Great Apostasy, Mormon doctrine, from the viewpoint of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Talmage wrote his book with the intention that it be used as a teaching tool within the LDS Church's Young Men's Mutual Improvement Association and the Young Women's Mutual Improvement Association. The book is "in many ways quite derivative" of B. H. Roberts's 1893 Outlines of Ecclesiastical History. Both writers borrowed heavily from the writings of Protestant scholars who argued that Roman Catholicism had apostatized from true Christianity. Talmage's book has been described as "the most recognizable and noted work on the topic" of Latter-day Saint views of the Great Apostasy.

The Articles of Faith

The Articles of Faith

Importance of Theological Study.—In the short period of time that measures the span of mortal existence, it is not possible for man to explore any considerable portion of the vast realm of knowledge; it becomes, therefore, the part of wisdom to select for study the branches that promise to prove of the greatest worth. All truth is of value—above price indeed in its place; yet with respect to their possible application, some truths are of incomparably greater worth than are others.

Jesus the Christ

Jesus the Christ

It is a matter of history that, at or near the beginning of what has since come to be known as the Christian era, the Man Jesus, surnamed the Christ, was born in Bethlehem of Judea. The principal data as to His birth, life, and death are so well attested as to be reasonably indisputable; they are facts of record, and are accepted as essentially authentic by the civilized world at large. True, there are diversities of deduction based on alleged discrepancies in the records of the past as to circumstantial details; but such differences are of strictly minor importance, for none of them nor all taken together cast a shadow of rational doubt upon the historicity of the earthly existence of the Man known in literature as Jesus of Nazareth.
