2017 Literary Calligraphy Calendar: 20th Annual

2017 Literary Calligraphy Calendar: 20th Annual

Susan Loy's 20th annual Literary Calligraphy calendar is a retrospective of her art, 1997-2017. She begins with the language of flowers in the 1990s and ends with geometric quantum physics-inspired art from 2016. The calendar includes her historic White House poster, popular designs, including "Love Is Patient," and nine others that survey the changing styles and motifs that Susan Loy has brought to modern calligraphy. Loy describes the calendar: "January presents Emily Dickinson's "The Lilac Is an Ancient Shrub," which I painted in the late 1980s. February salutes Valentine's Day with the version of 1 Corinthians 13, "Love Is Patient," that I created about 1997. March features Robert Frost's "The Road Not Taken," from about 1998. April presents "The White House Easter Egg Roll, 1878-1998," which I created for the White House in 1998-99 as part of my duties as "Artist on the Lawn," a tradition that dates back prior to photography. May celebrates wild flowers with Henry David Thoreau. June features the traditional "Irish Blessing" from about 2003. The color wheel is one of my favorite themes, featured in July. My husband and I share an August wedding anniversary with our niece and nephew, so I chose the "Apache Blessing," created about 2006, to celebrate all anniversaries. "Articl...

“The Flowers of the Month” Art Print by Susan Loy Literary Calligraphy

Susan Loy painted two flowers for each month, based on Victorian-era North American and Old English flower calendars. She presents The Flowers of the Month in a vibrant color wheel that reflects the change of seasons. The flowers: January: Carnation or Snowdrop, February: Violet or Primrose, March: Daffodil or Violet, April: Sweet Pea or Daisy, May: Lily of the Valley or Hawthorn, June: Rose or Honeysuckle, July: Larkspur or Water Lily, August: Gladiola or Poppy, September: Aster or Morning Glory, October: Calendula or Hop, November: Chrysanthemum, December: Paperwhite Narcissus or Holly. William Shakespeare, As You Like It; Summer "A something in a summer's day as slow her flambeau burn away, ... And still within a summer's night a something so transporting bright, I clap my hands to see." Emily Dickinson; Autumn "When the frost is on the punkin and the fodder's in the shock, ... when the heat of summer's over and the coolin' fall is here."
