Black Indians: A Hidden Heritage

Black Indians: A Hidden Heritage

There, black men and women found acceptance and friendship among our country’s original inhabitants. Though they seldom appear in textbooks and movies, the children of Native- and African-American marriages helped shape the early days of the fur trade, added a new dimension to frontier diplomacy, and made a daring contribution to the fight for American liberty.Since its original publication, William Loren Katz’s Black Indians has remained the definitive work on a long, arduous quest for freedom and equality. This new edition features a new cover and includes updated information about a neglected chapter in American history.

Early Native Americans in West Virginia (American Heritage)

Early Native Americans in West Virginia (American Heritage)

Once thought of as Indian hunting grounds with no permanent inhabitants, West Virginia is teeming with evidence of a thriving early native population. Today's farmers can hardly plow their fields without uncovering ancient artifacts, evidence of at least ten thousand years of occupation. Members of the Fort Ancient culture resided along the rich bottomlands of southern West Virginia during the Late Prehistoric and Protohistoric periods. Lost to time and rediscovered in the 1880s, Fort Ancient sites dot the West Virginia landscape. This volume explores sixteen of these sites, including Buffalo, Logan and Orchard. Archaeologist Darla Spencer excavates the fascinating lives of some of the Mountain State's earliest inhabitants in search of who these people were, what languages they spoke and who their descendants may be.

Native Americans of East-Central Indiana (American Heritage)

Native Americans of East-Central Indiana (American Heritage)

Native Americans lived, hunted and farmed in east-central Indiana for two thousand years before the area became a part of the Hoosier State. Mounds and enclosures built by Adena and Hopewell peoples still stand near the White River and reflect their vibrant and mysterious cultures. The Lenape tribes moved to east-central Indiana many years later after the Northwest Indian War. Led by the great chiefs Buckhongehelas and Kikthawenund, the White River Lenape attempted to forge an identity after being forced from their homeland on the Atlantic coast. Place names like Delaware County, Muncie, Yorktown and Anderson demonstrate the importance of the tribe in local history. Author Chris Flook explores the unique yet often untold history of the Native experience in east-central Indiana.

Healing American Indians

Healing American Indians

When some American Indian medicine men and women were called upon to heal an ailing tribes member, they would fast in order to receive a song in dream or vision instructing them in how to carry out the treatment of their patient. This is one of the many insights on American Indian healing practices reported by Dr. Frances Densmore. Over the course of 50 years, Dr. Densmore collected more than 2000 recordings of American Indian customs and traditions in song. Compiled in this CD are recordings of medicine men from a diverse representation of tribes singing and chanting those songs, delivered to them in dream by external powers and spirits, that they used to heal the sick.
